Historical Reflection

Episcopal_Bishop_Robert_Carter_Jett

If you cannot share my vision, I do not ask your aid.

To this end they must have high character, pure and healthy bodies, well-furnished minds, and a spirit of selfless service. These maxims represent the ideals of this school. The school stands for that definition of education which makes it consistent in drawing out that which is noblest and finest...

As opportunity permitted I attempted to visualize in detail a dignified, suitable, and adequate group of buildings, including an impressive architectural scheme.

Robert Carter Jett

Education meant training with character at its end.  Exact scholarship … had to be borne in mind that study could teach lessons of industry and faithfulness that would be vital long after the memorized dicta of the text-books were forgotten.

With no apologies nor unneeded explanation, we declare that our aim is to found a school worthy of … dreams of leadership; to train the body till it is the tested instrument with which to work; to train the mind till it is capable and eager to take the honest measure of reality and to kindle the desire of growth into … full stature … by service to the human race.

It had to be remembered that the campus was as important in the training of youth as the lecture room; and the ethics of play more far-reaching in its effects than the laws of syntax or mathematics.  It was with these convictions that we coined “The Full Stature of Manhood” as the motto of the school.

Survey and Staff Conclusions

test-hr-style-1

  1. Athletic Department requires enhancements to program, vision, and facilities, and in particular, facility improvements for girls sports
  2. Boys dorms need renovation
  3. Existing interior student spaces do not facilitate day-boarding integration and are inadequate for serving a fourth meal option in the evening
  4. Student population size needs study before additional major construction
  5. VES’ unique qualities and distinctive programs require more definition
  6. Recruitment and retention of special faculty is vital to the VES experience
