Varsity Boys Basketball Hustles Through Holiday Break

With the end of exams and the beginning of the holiday season, the Old 160 was left empty as students scattered for the break. One group, however, never stopped hustling. The boys varsity basketball team had a full schedule this break, participating in two North Carolina based tournaments––The Crown Town Classic in Charlotte and The John Wall Holiday Invitational in Raleigh.

Coming off of a win against Carolina Day school in Asheville, the Bishops headed off to The Crown Town Classic in Charlotte––representing the only out-of-state team. In the first round, the Bishops tipped off against the Hickory High School Tornados. Despite an early deficit, the Bishops made a 10-point comeback for a 46-44 win. On day two, the team took on Charlotte Country Day in a tight matchup that ran down to the wire. With a three-point shot at the buzzer from senior Charlie Barnett, the Bishops pulled off the 54-51 win. VES swept its games in the inaugural Crown Town tournament, and senior Bryce Waterman was awarded Crown Town's first-ever game MVP award.

With the momentum of a three-game winning streak, the Bishops traveled next to the John Wall Holiday Invitational in Raleigh. Cheered on by alumni, parents and students, VES took the first game against Cannon School 61-55. In the semi-final round, VES came up against a tough Brewster Academy team who, after ending the Bishops winning streak––serving us a 41-57 loss––went on to win the tournament. In their final game of the tournament, VES faced Needham B. Broughton High School on their home court. The Bishops fought hard to the finish in a well-matched game. The teams were tied through the final minute, with Broughton pulling ahead as the clock wound down and finishing with a score of 57-62. VES's tournament play earned 4th place in their division of eight top-notch teams. The team played strongly across the board, with Bryce Waterman lighting up the scoreboard with his three-pointers. Bryce was also named to the David West Division All-Tournament Team.
