Daniel O'Brien ’20 Qualifies for Foot Locker Cross Country National Championship
The highest honor for a high school distance runner is to earn a trip to the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championship. To punch this ticket a runner must place in the top 10 at one of four separate regional meets held every November across the United States. On Saturday, VES junior Daniel O'Brien's dream became a reality when he placed third at the Foot Locker South Region meet at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. A steady rain had turned the usually fast 5K course to mud, but that didn't deter Daniel as he blazed to a personal best time of 15:07. Competing against the best runners from the 12 states in the South region, he was the only runner from Virginia to clinch a berth in cross country's preeminent showcase. He also is one of only a handful of juniors to make it. Daniel will toe the line with the nation's best on Saturday, December 8 at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Daniel was joined by teammates Row Sterne ’21, Josh Buckley ’20 and Joseph Sterne ’19, who had successful outings of their own. Row placed 52nd in the sophomore race with a personal best time of 17:21. Josh ran a respectable time of 17:51 and Joseph delivered in 18:47, despite the slow course conditions.
