Dr. John C. Risher '28, Dear Friend of the School, Dies at 107
Dear VES Community,
It is with deep sadness that Virginia Episcopal School announces the death of its oldest alumnus and devoted friend of the school, Dr. John Calhoun Risher, VES Class of 1928, this morning at the age of 107.
Dr. Risher played Varsity football at VES and at the University of Virginia where he later served as team statistician for 54 years. A native of Charlottesville, he returned to Lynchburg where he made a career as a ear, nose, and throat specialist. VES’ students and faculty will remember with fondness Dr. Risher’s knack for storytelling and good humor as well as the celebration of many of his birthdays in the dining hall. Members of the William King Society will also remember his firm handshake and witty quip as he welcomed them to the “Old Guard” during reunion weekend each spring.
His 90-year association with VES is an irreplaceable link to history. He was an inspiration to our entire community, and we will be forever grateful for his friendship.
We will have more on Dr. Risher in the coming days and relay the funeral arrangements as they are finalized. Please keep daughter Alice and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
