Dean of Students

Virginia Episcopal School seeks a highly qualified individual to serve as Dean of Students. This position is essential to guiding the development of happy, healthy young adults striving toward their highest level of personal achievement. An element of that work is to ensure that the VES Community Standards and Expectations are embraced by our students. As important, this role will focus on creating and sustaining an environment of fun, joy, integrity, wellness, inclusiveness, learning and growth.

The individual in this role should have a genuine passion for working with high school students. S/he should have a track record of establishing outstanding rapport with students, a strong understanding of adolescent development and the teenage brain, a strong (and appropriate) sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and energy and enthusiasm for the student experience.

In addition, the individual should understand the nature of being a Dean of Students in a residential community and embrace the opportunities and challenges inherent in a boarding school. Importantly, the Dean of Students must train and support our faculty in our efforts to consistently apply community standards for each student and interaction.
A Sampling of the Duties Includes:
  • Directly lead the following aspects of the school’s program and members of the Student Life Team:
    • Community Standards and Expectations
    • The Health Center and School Counselor
    • The Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life
    • The Director of Student Activities
    • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Activities
    • Guide the education of students and faculty on community standards and behavioral expectations.
    • Ensure that the VES student leadership program supports the development of positive
      role models and student leaders with skills to appropriately guide, influence and confront
      peer behavior
    • Stay abreast of best practices, legal issues and current trends in boarding school communities
    • Act as a weekday Master in Charge (MIC), participate on a weekday duty team or dorm team
    • Act as a weekend AOD, responsible for coordinating weekend activities and the weekend duty schedule
    • Lead the Retention Management team
Other Requirements of the Position:
  • Teach one class
  • Coach or support an afternoon activity for one season
  • Serve as an advisor to 4-8 students
