The VES Sports Camp provides basic instruction, supervised recreation, and fellowship in sports and games for boys and girls ages 7-13. In all that we do, the emphasis is always on the development of positive, healthy sportsmanship and competitiveness in a fun and spirited fashion.
The Camp Directors are, VES Athletic Director Bob Leake and Jocelyne Frazier. The staff is composed of adults and counselors in high school and college who are experienced in working with children. The ratio of camper to counselor is 8:1. Most of the staff have been on staff with Sports Camp previously. All have a real desire to make the experience for each camper fun and rewarding.
Sports & Activities
Campers are grouped by age (7-8, 9-10, 11-13) to ensure the best experience for participation and learning. Campers receive daily instruction in the fundamentals of basketball, soccer, lacrosse and track. In addition, there is time each day for instruction in tennis for interested campers. Intra-camp competition within these sports, as well as various contests and sports related games, are part of each week’s activities.
Camp begins each morning at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m.. The campers should arrive between 8:45 and 9 a.m. They are to be picked up promptly at 3 p.m. Counselors will be in the parking lot to assist with both drop off and pick up.
Sports Camp is held on the Virginia Episcopal School campus. Campers have full access to all athletic facilities, including soccer and lacrosse fields, eight tennis courts, swimming pool and the Van Every Athletic Complex. Lunch is held in Harrison Dining Room.
Each camper is required to bring his/her own lunch, which will be refrigerated in the dining hall throughout the morning. Sports Camp will not provide any food for campers. Water and lemonade will be available at all breaks.
Clothing & Equipment
Campers should arrived dressed in play clothes and athletic shoes. All items need to be labeled with the child’s name to avoid being misplaced. Each camper will receive a Sports Camp t-shirt on the first day of the week.
Fellowship & Team Spirit
A positive environment conducive to each person’s general wellbeing is a priority at Sports Camp. Respect and appreciation for one another will be a daily emphasis.
Bob Leake and Jocelyne Frazier reserve the right to ask that any camper whose conduct becomes a problem for other campers or counselors be withdrawn from camp. Whenever possible, communication with parents by Bob Leake to avoid such extreme measures will occur.
Campers enjoy the use of the VES swimming pool. Each age group will use the pool in the afternoon. The schedule for each group will be given to campers at the start of each session. Certified lifeguards will be on duty during that time. Alternate activities will be available to those who do not wish to swim.
