Theatre Arts

Theatre—an inherently interdisciplinary program of study—allows us to ask essential questions as we explore and express the human experience. At VES, we offer Acting, Musical Theater and Technical Theater for students beginning to explore the craft and serious young artists interested in taking their skills to a new level. Students benefit from:

Production Experience. Participate onstage and behind the scenes in a variety of productions, from major musical productions to ensemble shows and one-act plays.

Individualized Attention. The small class sizes at VES help you realize your full potential through close, personal attention essential to growth and development.

Acting

Learn the fundamental concepts and techniques of acting in the theatre. These courses include an introduction to a variety of contemporary acting techniques and methods from teachers including Konstantin Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, Larry Moss, Dudley Knight, Sanford Meisner, Kristin Linklater and others. The integration of acting, voice and movement will be combined with work on exploring honest and committed objectives. You also will study literature and history of the theatre, script analysis, given circumstances, playwriting and play direction.

Musical Theater

Develop and sharpen your acting, singing and dancing skills. You will explore the theories of the craft and learn firsthand how to put those theories into practice.

Technical Theater

Gain a solid foundation and hands-on practice in all aspects of the technical production process and make key decisions from concept to final production—from scene design and painting, lighting design, sound engineering, costume design, hair and makeup design, stage design and construction, stage management and stagecraft.
