Monte Hogan '17

Charlottesville, Virginia

"I chose VES because it is a tight knit community where teachers and students genuinely care about each other. We all gently push each other to be better."

I am a member of the girls varsity tennis team, girls varsity soccer team, art club, food committee and Global Ambassadors, as well as a Residential Advisor on Perkins dorm. These activities give me the opportunity to talk to different people and make an impact on the VES community.

My favorite classes are Art and AP English Composition because I get the opportunity to creatively engage in class discussions and group projects. Winter is one of my favorite seasons — I can cheer on my fellow Bishops at basketball games and swim meets.

VES is such a warm, inviting, tight-knit community where students and teachers genuinely care about each other. I am so excited about the next two years as a Bishop!

Courtlandt Smith '17

Charleston, West Virginia

I’m a member of the football, soccer and baseball teams. I also serve as a Resident Assistant on Pendleton Dorm and a Big Sib to underclassmen. U.S. History and Economics are favorites — I like to learn about how countries interact.

VES is great because it allows me to try new things in a really supportive environment — things like robotics club, Quiz Bowl, photography/yearbook clubs, Global Ambassadors and performing in the school musical. When I was looking at schools, VES’ incredible sense of community is what sold me.

Caroline Dabney '16

Lynchburg, Virginia

I love being a day student in a community where the majority of people live on campus — it offers the best of both worlds because I can get involved in boarding activities and boarding life even though I go home every night.

I’m a member of the lacrosse, basketball and tennis teams, and I join the mountain biking team in the fall whenever I can. Outside of sports and the classroom, I’m involved in the robotics team, yearbook committee, business club, communications, debate team, Wounded Warrior and vestry club, and I’m a Residential Advisor on New Dorm for freshman girls. This year, two of my lacrosse teammates and I will be in charge of LAX 4 Alzheimer’s — a lacrosse tournament VES started that raises money for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Some of my best memories have been made at VES, including our lacrosse spring break trips and the campus Tough Mudder competition! How would I describe VES? In one word: enthusiastic.

Aaron Johnson '18

Baldwin, New York

I’m a member of the soccer, table tennis (yep!) and baseball teams, and you can often find me playing basketball and soccer in the gym, video games in the Randolph lounge or hanging out on Box Plaza.

I have a lot of favorite things about VES: government class because we get to have lots of thought-provoking debates; the southern hospitality at VES; being pushed by faculty and other students to make the most out of myself; and I have to admit, it’s pretty great that VES is so close to Bojangles. I like to head over there to get my favorite meal: Bo Berry Biscuits with a Pibb Extra.

Chan Jang '18

Goyang City, Republic of Korea

I am a member of the soccer and baseball teams and a member of Student Council, where I serve as Sophomore Class President. I love to try new activities at VES, including joining the new table tennis team. I really enjoy making videos around school, whether it’s for the communications club or about the robotics club.

I chose VES because it really feels like a family. Everyone knows and cares about each other, is very comfortable with each other, and we support and encourage each other to try new things. It’s easy to meet new people or sit with someone new at lunch because everyone is so welcoming. The entire VES community is so warm and engaging, I always try to motivate students to relax and dive in, rather than staying in their rooms. As the year goes on, I'm looking forward to continuing my journey toward full stature.

Tayloe Hunter '18

Tazewell, Virginia

I followed in the footsteps of my three older siblings in coming to VES. I live on Perkins dorm and greatly enjoy being involved in various activities and organizations. I am a member of the Student Council, Global Ambassadors and DIG bible study and I played a leading role in starting the new debate team. I am a member of the varsity cross country and basketball teams, and I enjoy playing violin, horseback riding, running and skiing. My favorite thing about VES is the close relationships I’m able to build with the students and faculty; I truly feel like VES is one big family! I love being a Bishop, and I’m so excited to see what the next three years at this wonderful community bring.

Woods Cook '18

Lynchburg, Virginia

If you come to VES, you will definitely be involved in this community! I am a member of the VES football, lacrosse and basketball teams; a member of the business club; a Big Sib to underclassmen and a sophomore class representative on Student Council. Academically, my favorite classes at VES are Analysis and Physics. Who wouldn’t want to experiment with paper airplanes in physics to learn about force and motion? Real life, hands-on learning is the best.

My favorite thing about VES is having the opportunity to meet people from around the world and the sense of community you feel the minute you visit campus. I chose VES because it challenges me academically, socially and athletically; provides endless opportunities; and you can create long-lasting connections with students, teachers and coaches. Coach Jones, head football coach, is one of the very best. Not only am I becoming a better player, he’s helped me become a better person.

Zoe Hazan '17

Raleigh, North Carolina

"One word I would choose to describe VES is individualism. I believe that, while we are a family, VES gives us a lot of time to focus on ourselves. We figure out who we are and who we want to be during our time here. Our teachers, coaches and advisors all want us to succeed and are willing to do the most to make that happen."

I play volleyball, basketball and lacrosse at VES, participate in the book club known as Basia Librum, the yarn club (I love to knit!), business club, and I’m a resident assistant on Perkins dorm. English is my favorite subject, from AP English Composition where I get to use my imagination to write every day to Book Night to being a peer tutor in English.

The reason I chose VES is the students and faculty — you can immediately tell that everyone is encouraged to make VES their own. I also am thankful for the relationship between the students and teachers — I even consider the teachers some of my best friends!

As a seven-day boarder, I spend lots of time on campus and the weekends here are awesome. We go off campus on trips to Busch Gardens, shopping at the malls, bowling, theater, hiking and more, and on campus there are so many fun activities, you’ll find events like karaoke or a talent show, or just downtime to hang out with friends!
