Opening Well 2020

Here you will find up-to-date details for how we plan to provide in-person teaching, learning and residential life this fall.  We look forward to welcoming our new and returning students to campus the first week of September, with classes beginning Monday, September 7.

Our "Opening Well" Plan & Answers to Your Questions

Since May 2020, the VES Opening Well Task Force—a subset of the VES leadership team—has been working to develop a comprehensive plan that will allow us to welcome students to campus this fall with the VES community’s health and wellbeing our utmost priority. Our goal is to not only Open Well but to Stay Well, so that we may deliver the most effective experience on-campus and online.

All decisions are guided by our paramount commitment to the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff.

  • Protocols are in alignment with the Commonwealth of Virginia, CDC and Virginia Department of Health mandates and guidelines.

  • The plan has been shaped with the insights and expertise of Dr. Chris Lewis, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Centra Health, cardiologist and current VES parent, who also serves as administrative lead for the regional health system's Covid-19 Clinical Task Force.

  • Our plan was submitted in August for review by the Virginia Council for Private Education, the accrediting organization for private schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • The cooperation of students and parents, along with our faculty, staff and vendor partners is crucial in helping to ensure that we are doing everything possible to safeguard the health of our VES community, while delivering an excellent student experience.

Please read the information below in detail as it details changes to the Student & Parent Handbook for the 2020-21 school year, required as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Why In-Person, On-Campus Living & Learning?

VES believes that in-person teaching and learning, engagement in co-curricular activities, a fulfilling residential life, and meaningful, personal interactions among faculty and students create a transformational educational experience in which students can grow toward full stature.

Even though we will be living into a “new normal,” we are committed to delivering these hallmarks of a VES education. And while we cannot eliminate all risks, we are working diligently to mitigate risks in every way possible.
