Recently Mrs. Martha Terrell Burruss and Chaplain White took the VES Outdoor Club to visit the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg. The visit included walking the grounds, admiring the flowers and foliage, peeking in the chapel, locating some of the oldest memorials, exploring the first local smallpox hospital, imitating statues and feeding the goats. It was an adventure!
Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is the oldest municipal cemetery in Virginia still in use today and has a diverse population of nearly 20,000 buried there. The grounds are filled with hundreds of varieties of native and heirloom plants, including the largest public collection of antique roses in the state of Virginia. And the Pest House for smallpox patients is a leading example of pioneering medical and palliative care delivered by Dr. John Jay Terrell. Check it out next time you visit Lynchburg!
