This morning, the stage was set for the English 10 classes to face off in their second annual poetry slam. Five finalists—Bill Chen, Phoebe Hanning, William Harris, Alex Sterne and Fisher Zhang—chosen by their peers to represent their classes, performed captivating recitations of famous poems in front of the entire 10th grade following chapel. The crowd was captivated and the panel of judges (faculty/staff members Mrs. Varner, Ms. Blaum and Mr. Abeles and former poetry competition winners Abigail Hanning '21 and Georgia Mugisha '22) had a difficult task scoring the outstanding recitations but, when the final votes were counted, Bill Chen walked away the first place prize in the 2021 Poetry Recitation Contest for his powerful reading of “The Starry Night” by Anne Sexton. Congratulations, Bill!
