VES Hosts Intramural Ping Pong Championship

This past Sunday VES held the Annual Ping Pong Championship. After the preliminary round, the semi-final matches were David Basnight '22 vs. Carly Chafin '21 and James Fentress '21 vs. Brandon Yang '21. Chafin and Fentress put up strong resistance in their bouts, but both eventually fell 3-1. (Chafin went on to win a controversial third place victory over Fentress in a quickly decided 7-point match.)

The final between David Basnight and Brandon Yang was a back and forth battle between well-matched opponents with different skill sets. Basnight took an aggressive close-to-the-table approach, using his backhand primarily to set up his devastating forehand smash. Yang preferred an all-round approach, using a variety of spins and counters from mid-range. Yang took the first and third sets, while Basnight took second and fourth, culminating in a decisive fifth and final set. Yang came out with a commanding 5-point lead which Basnight was able to narrow down to 2 points at 5-7, but in the end Brandon Yang took the final set 11-7, making him this year’s VES Ping Pong Champion! Many thanks to all our participants and to everyone who cheered on their classmates.
