Boys Cross Country Makes History at States with a Back-to-Back Team, Individual Title and State Meet RecordThe Bishops Boys’ Cross Country individual and overall team performances at the VISAA State meet this past Thursday were nothing short of spectacular. For the second straight year they won the D2 team title with an average time of 17:00 over the challenging Pole Green Park 5K lower course. Daniel O’Brien led the charge, claiming his 3
rd consecutive individual state cross country title. His time of 15:11 was a new course and State Meet record. It was a full 40 seconds ahead of the D2 runner up, and a over a minute faster than the D1 winner. Row Sterne earned All-State honors by crossing the line in 4
th place in 16:42. Colin Walsh ran 17:16 and joined him on the All-State list with a 16
th finish. Josh Buckley narrowly missed All-State recognition, but contributed to the team title with a 21
st place finish in 17:27. Hunter Buresh rounded out the scorers by crossing as 5
th man in 18:19, which was good for 37
th overall. Helping to displace runner-up Roanoke Catholic’s 5
th man, and thereby seal the victory, were Thomas Cook in 44
th and Hardt Lesko in 51
st places, respectively. Also racing for the Bishops were John Tharpe, Josh Schindler, Fisher Zhang, David Herbert and Teddy Tharp.
Inspired by a superb performance on the boys’ side, the girls followed suit, competed hard, and ran admirably over the 5km layout. As a team, the girls finished 22nd in a field of 28 teams. Sophomore Delaney Bright led all Bishop finishers in 68th place out of 242 runners with a time of 23:01. Next across the line was freshmen Morgan Scott, finishing in 131st place in a time of 24:54. Sophomore Mia Hindermann crossed the finish line in 141st place (25:24), junior Lillian Pang was next in 25:38 (148th). Junior Grayson Gondi rounded out the scoring five for VES, finishing in 27:58 (200th place), and Samantha Dodson finished 6th for the Bishops in a time of 29:12 (216th place).
