This year VES introduced dance as a fall afternoon activity. As part of the Fine Arts department, the team is directed by Erin Rupe and assisted by Aqura Nicholson. Dance students have learned styles such as ballet, contemporary and lyrical, as well as elements of jazz, modern and hip-hop.
To showcase their season's work, the dancers performed last week during Fine Arts Friday.
The first dance was a salsa piece, choreographed and performed by Pablo Lopez Ardon, an exchange student from Guatemala. His partner for the piece was Landis Thompson '19. The second dance was contemporary in style–a blend of ballet and modern dance. This was choreographed by the program director Erin Rupe, and performed by Georgia Mugisha '22, Megan Foster '19, Julianna Sigler '19 and Landis Thompson '19. The show was followed by a question and answer panel in which the dancers taught the school about genres of dance, types of movement and choreography as a process.
VES looks forward to growing this program and to having more dance performances in the future.
