Cross Country

Saturday, October 26, BRC/VIC Races at New Covenant
VES Boys’ XC earned repeated as the Virginia Independent Conference champs this past Saturday at New Covenant. Facing tough competition from Roanoke Catholic and six other teams, the Bishops came away victorious for the second straight year.  Daniel O’Brien led the charge, earning his 4th consecutive VIC title and blazing to a new course record of 15:42. He finished a full 1:13 ahead of second place. But the decisive battles took place behind him, as one Bishop after another ran down key opponents. Row Sterne placed 3rd, Josh Buckley 5th, and Colin Walsh 7th, earning All-Conference honors and getting in before runner-up Roanoke Catholic’s 3rd man crossed the line. Hardt Lesko, Hunter Buresh and Thomas Cook all placed in the top 20 to help seal the victory.
The girls’ race featured some of the strongest runners in the VISAA. A fine Roanoke Catholic squad took the Blue Ridge Conference title after a tough battle with Eastern Mennonite and Chatham Hall. The young Bishop squad ran hard and finished 4th in the seven team field, a solid finish in one of the deepest conferences in the state. Sophomore captains Samantha Dodson and Mia Hindermann led the Bishop pack, which included freshmen Morgan Scott and junior Lillian Pang, through much of the race. Delaney Bright was the first Bishop across the finish line, and newcomer Grayson Gondi rounded out the squad for VES.
Varsity Tennis

Thursday, October 24, BRC Tournament v New Covenant
On a crisp autumn afternoon, the Bishops stepped onto the courts to face a talented Covenant School. They swept the singles courts, although there were some tough matches. Carly stayed cool and steady and beat her opponent 8-1. Claibourne went down 2-3 to her opponent and then came back to win six games straight, winning overall 8-3 (She also had the shot of the match with running backwards lob). Lilly Lewis played a tough opponent on court 3, she battled back and forth and ended up winning 8-6. Sierra walked away with her game at 8-0. Morgan went down early in the match but then won two in a row and then dominated after that, winning 8-4. Mary also played a very close game against a very well-matched opponent. Eventually Mary’s solid backcourt play saw her to an 8-5 victory.

With the match already decided, the doubles games were just for fun. Carly and Morgan won 6-3, Lilly and Sierra won 6-4, and Walker and Mary won 6-0. The players all walked off the courts laughing and smiling with their opponents. It was lovely sportsmanship from both teams.
