VES Names Kevin Gates Head Coach for Boys Lacrosse
Virginia Episcopal School is excited to welcome Coach Kevin Gates to lead our boys lacrosse program. He will work together with assistant coaches Chris Hamilton, Matt LaFreniere and Chris Button. For the last 16 years, Kevin has been the Head Boys Lacrosse Coach at Worcester Prep School in Berlin, Maryland, where he has helped 23 student-athletes play in the NCAA, including seven Division I players at schools including Harvard, UPenn, Georgetown, St. John’s and Furman. At Worcester, Kevin coached five All-Americans and six academic All-Americans.
Originally from Centerport, NY, Kevin won two National JUCO Lacrosse Championships at Nassau Community College before transferring and playing his final two years at Salisbury University in Maryland. After working on Wall Street for one year, Kevin went back to Salisbury where he served as Assistant Lacrosse Coach under Jim Berkman, the all-time winningest coach in the NCAA. Kevin helped Salisbury improve each year, culminating with Salisbury’s first-ever appearance in the National Championship Game in 1991.
After receiving his master’s degree from Salisbury University, Kevin went on to be an Assistant Lacrosse Coach at the University of Notre Dame, where he helped the Fighting Irish to their second appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament. Kevin’s first head coaching job was at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, where he started the program and worked in the Admissions department. After spending five years at Shenandoah, Kevin moved back to New York to start another program at SUNY Delhi College, where he also worked as an Enrollment Counselor. In 2002, Delhi finished 6th in the country and Kevin was awarded the National Junior College Lacrosse Coach of the Year.
Kevin is married to Silvia Gates, and they have two children, Mac and Carlie. In addition to coaching lacrosse at VES, Kevin will serve on a duty team, assist with building our summer programming, and support the Admissions office this spring.
