English 10 Students Face-Off in Annual Poetry Slam

The stage was set for English 10 classes to face off in their annual poetry slam, with five finalists chosen by their peers to represent their classes. Owen Julich drew to perform first and brought the crowd to its feet with a wonderful rendition of Rudy Fransisco’s spoken word poem: “The Heart and The Fist.” He set the bar high. Hardt Lesko, the next rep for Ms. Markunas’ English 10, did a splendid job reciting Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods in a Snowy Evening.” Mr. Campbell’s class reps came next: first, Jack Prahinksi with his grand oration of “To Helen” by Edgar Allen Poe, followed by Abigail Hanning with a captivating rendition of “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth. Mrs. Csatlos’ class rep Justine Shin closed out the show with an evocative E.E. Comings poem, which had the crowd howling for more! The judges labored hard with their scoring, and when the final votes were in and counted, Abigal Hanning walked away the 2019 Poem-Off Winner! She received a Barnes & Noble gift card, her name will go on a plaque to be hung in Hopkins Writing Center, and her class will enjoy a pizza party! Congratulations to all participants as it isn’t easy standing on stage and reciting poetry in front of your entire grade and an esteemed panel of judges!
