James "Trae" Watkins '08 Speaks to VES Community

To launch Black History Month, alumnus Trae Watkins ‘08 took to the stage in Garmey Theater to speak to the VES community. His impassioned speech––titled “400 years of Miseducation and Resilience”––brought to the forefront current events of racial tension and divide within the country, while tying those instances to a history of pain and struggle. James asked those in the audience to lean into tough conversations rather than shying away from them––noting that Black History is American History. He also shared a message of hope: that within this generation there are many future leaders. Everyone should find platforms to speak in the fight against racism and injustice; everyone has a voice to create change.
