Celebrate Distinguished Alumna Vivian Howard, Class of 1996
Vivian Howard—acclaimed chef, restaurateur, author and television personality—will be honored with VES's Distinguished Alumna Award during this special weekend.
While at VES, Vivian served as a member of the counselor body, volleyball team, Model Organization of American States and Meteor and was the recipient of the Latin Award.
After honing her skills and love of food in some of New York City's most esteemed restaurants after college, Vivian returned with husband Ben Knight to Kinston, NC, to open her first award-winning restaurant, Chef & the Farmer. They subsequently launched three other successful restaurants, and in 2016, Vivian released her first cookbook, Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South.
Vivian also is well-known for her five-year series A Chef’s Life, for which she earned a Daytime Emmy, Peabody Award and James Beard Award for Outstanding Personality/Host. In early 2020, she will debut South by Somewhere on PBStelling food stories of the American South in the context of global food traditions.
