Your Guide to Success 2020-21: New VES Families

We Can't Wait to Welcome Our New Families to VES!

Get Prepared for 2020-21 with Your Guide to Success

Each summer, we send our families a comprehensive ebook that details all you need to know to prepare for a great start to your first year at Virginia Episcopal School. This summer, Your Guide to Success in 2020-21 is being issued in a series of installments, as we continue to solidify plans for the coming year that mitigate risks and support the health and well-being of our VES community. At this time, we have published Part 1: Information for Incoming Students (in June) and Part 2: Information for VES Families (in July).

So, before you completely kick back for summer, it is very important that you thoroughly review the information in the ebooks (at right), designed to answer questions you may have about the coming year at VES and for you to take action to complete key forms and surveys.

Work Through EACH Guide

Required Summer Reading for All

Dear Students,

Every summer, once school is done, I choose a paperback book from the library or local bookstore and enjoy finding a great spot outside to sit and read. Maybe the hammock, maybe the porch, maybe a tree, or if I’m lucky, maybe the beach.

The goal behind summer reading is that there is a good book waiting for all of us to enjoy. We have compiled a list of nine books and hopefully the one for you. Each book comes highly recommended by one of your fellow students or one of the teachers here at VES. Read one of these books and when we arrive back at school this autumn, we’ll share our experiences together in groups.

We also ask that you read “Picnic, Lightning” by Billy Collins, a truly amazing poet, which you will discuss in detail in English class.

Enjoy your summer!

Mr. Campbell

World Language Placement

Placement in Spanish and French classes is based on your transcripts and teacher recommendations. When you see your class placement, if you believe you have been placed in the wrong course or would like to discuss or advocate for a different placement, please reach out to World Language Department Chair Amanda Rhem at arhem@ves.org.

ALL NEW STUDENTS CURRENTLY TAKING FRENCH OR SPANISH

Please forward this link to your current French or Spanish teacher.  Ask him/her to fill out the brief survey as soon as possible.

Roommate Compatibility Survey

To help us of create the most solid pairings, we ask that parents and students complete this survey together. We will use your responses, along with input from the admissions representative who met with you, to assign roommates.

You will learn your roommate pairing when you arrive on campus. We have had great success over the past few years in creating good partnerships that help students succeed at VES and broaden their horizons. If you have any questions about this, please contact Dean of Student Life Amy Kolman: akolman@ves.org.

Questions?

Please reach out if you have questions, using your VES contacts list included in the guide, or touching base with a Big Sib or Parent Ambassador. And continue to follow us on social media to stay connected.
