New Head of School Search

Dear VES Community,

Tommy Battle has elected to retire as the Head of School at the completion of this academic year. Tommy has done a masterful job in directing and advancing the school in his decade at the helm. He leaves Virginia Episcopal School in great shape with a full enrollment of highly qualified, motivated students; dedicated, highly talented faculty; and a gifted administrative team. Virginia Episcopal School has never been better positioned. Finding Tommy’s replacement is a tall task, but we are very excited to find not only the best person, but the right person to continue to advance the school to even greater heights.

I am honored to lead the Head of School search committee. Our committee seeks to provide timely communication to keep you apprised of our progress as well as to provide you appropriate opportunities for engage in the process.

The committee is working with search firm RG175. In May 2019, we launched the initial phase of our search to clearly define our school—our mission, strategic vision, community and the virtues of our school we hold sacred—and to identify exactly what characteristics we are looking for in our new Head of School. The search consultants surveyed and interviewed the constituencies that make up the VES family to produce a position statement used to attract the right candidates. We have been interviewing a significant pool of applicants over the summer, and anticipate that we will announce this fall several finalists whom we will invite to the school for a weekend visit.

What can you do to help?
  • Engage in the process when given the opportunity. Share your input with the search firm. Participate in interviews. Let us know what you think.
  • Be patient. This will be a long and thoughtful process by the search committee. We are confident that you will be impressed with the candidates presented in the fall.
  • Be prepared to help in the fall when welcome finalists to campus for weekend visits.
Thank you for your help in the process! Go Bishops!
