We Invite You to Apply to VES

Thank you for considering VES and for taking the time to fill out our application. The VES admission process is straightforward and designed to give us the chance to get to know you better. Here is what you need to do to apply to VES:

Completing the Application

You can apply to VES for the 2020-2021 school year in two different ways. Choose either our online application (our preferred application method) or the SSAT Standard Application Online.

Application Deadlines and Decision Timeframes

The Admissions Committee will begin reviewing completed applications for all boarding applicants on February 1 (the day applicant review will begin on January 6), with the first round of boarding decisions sent out on March 10 (day decisions early March). Late applicants will be accepted on a space-available basis.

If you missed these application deadlines, don't fret. While we fill the majority of our openings by May, we continue to review applications that come in past the initial deadline and offers are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Give us a call at 434.385.3607 or email us at and let us know you are interested in applying.

International Applicants

Please visit our International Applicant page for additional information.

Note to Applicants

We want to hear from you! Please fill out your Applicant section and answer the questions on your own and in your own voice. Authenticity is more important than perfection. Just follow these steps:
  1. Read through the application.
  2. Take time (but not too much time) and give some thought to your answers before you start to write.
  3. Be sure you are telling us some things you want us to know about you and why you will be a good fit for VES.
  4. PROOFREAD your work.
  5. Send it to us, along with a photo of you and the $50 (domestic) or $150 (international) application fee.

Note to Parents/Guardians

Please allow your child to complete the Applicant section on his/her own. The application is an important step in helping us to get to know your child.

Please complete your section and tell us what we ought to know about your child so that we may best serve him or her.

Visit Our Campus

We love visitors! Getting to know VES is an important part of this process, and the best way to do that is to visit our campus. Come as often as you like.

Open houses for boarding students and parents: We strongly encourage prospective boarders to spend the night. Our Overnight Open Houses are always a fun way to see the school. If you are not able to participate in one of these events, you are welcome to visit anytime.

Open houses for day students and parents: We offer a day-long Open House designed for you and your family.

Individual Visits: A typical visit requires approximately two hours.

During your stay you will have the chance to sit in on classes, meet students and teachers, talk with coaches and take a tour of the campus. You will meet with an Admissions Counselor and discuss questions you might have.

Please contact the Admissions Office at 434.385.3607 or make an appointment here.

The interview is a required part of the admission process and can be done at the same time as the campus visit or at another scheduled time. Skype interviews are available for international students who cannot visit our campus.

SSAT Testing

Students applying for the 9th and 10th grade are required to take the Secondary School Admissions Test (register here) for admission to VES.

To begin the SSAT online registration process, Create a Student Account. When you are first asked if you have been provided with an Access Code, check "No," unless you have received a specific code from our Admission office (formatted as 1A. When you are asked to look up the school for testing sites, you may type in Virginia Episcopal School or use our school code: 7972. Students applying for the 11th or 12th grade may submit a PSAT, SAT or ACT score instead of the SSAT.

Please Note: If you have a comprehensive evaluation, including a WISC, WJ, etc., please include the complete results, summaries and recommendations.

Please submit the transcript request form to your current school to have an official transcript and standardized test scores forwarded to VES. Have the school endorse a school profile and attendance record. VES requires recommendation forms from your current English and math teachers. The guidance counselor recommendation is part of the transcript request form. The Admissions Committee also welcomes letters from other teachers, friends or alumni who know you well and are interested in advocating on your behalf.
