Merit Scholarships

VES is proud to offer two highly selective merit scholarships for students entering the 9th grade. These awards recognize young leaders who excel academically, demonstrate integrity, and contribute meaningfully beyond the classroom. Recipients embody the spirit of a VES education, reflecting our values of high character, well-furnished, healthy lives, and a spirit of selfless service. Selection is based on a holistic review of each candidate's achievements, leadership, and potential to make a lasting impact with our community.
Both scholarships are renewable each year for students who remain in good standing at VES. Awards are granted without consideration of a family's financial circumstances. If a family's demonstrated financial need exceeds the scholarship amount, additional assistance may be available through our need-based financial aid program.
Bishops Scholarship
For Domestic Boarding Students
The Bishops Scholarship honors students whose intellect, character, and leadership enrich the VES community. Recipients are motivated learners who engage deeply in academics and co-curricular life, lead with integrity, and inspire others through their example. Bishops Scholars embody the spirit of residential life at VES, contributing meaningfully to campus and setting a standard for excellence in all they do.
Scholarship Details
VES awards two Bishops Scholarships each year to students entering the 9th grade:
- First Place: 85% scholarship
- Second Place: 50% scholarship
Alton P. Sparkman Scholarship
For Day Students
The Alton P. Sparkman Scholarship is the highest merit honor awarded to day students at VES. It recognizes young scholars who combine academic excellence with integrity, initiative, and a commitment to their school and community. Sparkman Scholars are engaged and purposeful learners whose leadership and curiosity strengthen the VES experience for all.

VES awards two Sparkman Scholarships each year to students entering the 9th grade:
- First Place: 50% scholarship
- Second Place: 25% scholarship
