David Basnight ’22 | Ahoskie, NC
As a member of the Counselor Body and the Honor Committee, I serve as a student leader. In my Counselor role, I live on Ainslie Dorm, where I support our freshmen boarders. I love sports, and this year, I am the quarterback and a captain of the football team, and I play basketball and baseball. I also serve on the Vestry, where I especially like making pancakes for everyone during pancake chapels. I am proud to be a VES legacy student; my dad and uncle both graduated from VES in 1972, and my sister, Cameron, graduated in 2019.
Nat Boling ’22 | Alexandria, VA
When Covid hit, my family suggested I consider boarding school, and that’s when I discovered VES—the school my great-grandfather attended! I immediately loved the campus and all the people I met. With a small school community, it’s easy to build relationships with the students and faculty here. I live on Pendleton Hall, play lacrosse, serve as a manager of the field hockey team and sing in Glee Club.
David Darko ’23 | Hanover, MD
I live on Randolph Hall, and this year I am serving as a Junior Resident Advisor on Pendleton Dorm. I play center on our football team, as well as wrestle and play lacrosse. One of my favorite things about VES is being on the road with my teammates when we have extra time to build camaraderie.
Henry Johnston ’23 | Raleigh, NC
I really enjoy the boarding experience—I live on Pendleton Dorm this year—and have made lots of great friends at VES from my hometown of Raleigh, across North Carolina and Virginia, and from all over the world. In addition to playing football and baseball, I am a member of our Green Team, a club that helps the school understand the importance of recycling and sustainability, and I recently joined the Badminton Club! My dad is a graduate of the VES class of 1988.
Tae-In Kim ’23 | Seoul, Korea
I am a forward on the soccer team, a member of the Photography Club and live on Ainslie Dorm. Students can create their own clubs with a faculty advisor, so this year, some friends and I started the Math Club. I am excited about the variety of activities offered every weekend on and off-campus and having just four classes per day so we can really focus on each subject.
Sierra Lewis ’23 | Lynchburg, VA
Among so many things I love at VES are my sports. I play tennis in the fall—in addition to playing singles, my sister, Lilly ’22, and I make a hard-to-beat doubles team—and I play lacrosse in the spring. This year, I joined the new Badminton Club and I serve as a Junior Resident Assistant on Perkins Dorm. Every year, I really look forward to our all-school End of Summer Dance!
Ryan Locker ’22 | Tokyo, Japan
I grew up in Tokyo and came to VES as a junior. I live on campus in Ainslie Dorm, where I also serve as a Counselor, and I love to run. In fact, you can find me most mornings going for a campus run and, in the afternoons, running cross-country and track. I care about sustainability and other global issues, so I joined our Green Team and Global Ambassadors clubs. The VES faculty are amazing, and I find it easy to ask for help when I need it.
Lily McKee ’23 | Raleigh, NC
I've always been competitive in athletics and, at VES, I am a leader on the girls cross country team and play lacrosse. Clubs are another great way to be involved in the community. I’m a member of the Green Team and Badminton clubs. I live on Perkins Dorm, and serve as a Junior Resident Assistant on Wyatt Dorm. What I love most about being a boarding student at VES is that I get to be around my friends all the time! My brother, Max, graduated in the class of 2021.
Luke Meadows ’22 | Lynchburg, VA
After two years as a day student, last year I decided that I wanted to board, and it’s been a great decision for me. This year, I live on Pendleton Hall. I love all the activities at VES, especially our school dances. I play football, basketball and lacrosse—my real passion—and I will be playing on the University of Lynchburg lacrosse team when I start college next fall. My siblings also attended VES. My brother, Matt, graduated in 2015, and my sister, Hadley, graduated in 2018. Both went on to play collegiate sports, too!
Ella McNeely ’22 | Richmond, VA
Hello! I love hanging out with all my friends at VES. This year, I get to live on Jett Hall—the first year that girls have lived in the original campus building! I’m a captain of my field hockey team and a member of our girls lacrosse team. I also have a passion for participating in Service Learning programs at VES. What I value most about my time at VES is the independence I’ve gained by living on campus.
Georgia Mugisha ’22 | Kigali, Rwanda
I am excited about my role as a student leader at VES—last year I was a Junior Resident Assistant and now I am a member of the Counselor Body. This year, I am pursuing an Advanced Studies project in studio art—my true passion. I also am an active member of our Global Ambassadors club and VES’s Black Student Union.
Jane Sandridge ’22 | Raleigh, NC
Hi! I can't believe it's my senior year! I live on Perkins Dorm and love the community and fun that comes with it. For sports, I play field hockey, swim and am a member of the girls soccer team. I also am a member of our Vestry.
Louise Sprunt ’22 | Wilmington, NC
Perkins Dorm is my VES home and I serve as a Counselor on Perkins Dorm. I participate as a member of the Vestry, am a captain of our field hockey team and play soccer in the spring. My favorite VES event is our annual Casino Night—and the fact that each year it’s held at a surprise venue. My sister, Margaret, is a member of the VES class of 2020.
Arghya Thallapragada ’22 | Lynchburg, VA
As a day student, I have always chosen to get involved in as much as I can at VES. I serve as a Counselor, with duty on Wyatt Dorm, and am a member of the Honor Committee. I am co-editor of the yearbook, and am a member of the Green Team, the GSA, and the faculty-student DEI committee. I also play on the field hockey team. Among my favorite things about VES are the nights spent watching films such as Nosferatu, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and Kung Fu Hustle with friends in Garmey Theater, followed by trips to Waffle House or joining a vinyl listening party under blue lights. My little brother, Amogh, has followed me to VES and is a member of the class of 2024.
Clark Watts ’23 | Lynchburg, VA
I am a junior day student, but I’ve known VES most of my life because of the long history our family has with VES. My grandfather graduated in the class of '53, my dad is a 1983 graduate. I will be the youngest of the three kids in my family to graduate, behind my brother, Ash ’19, and sister, Carlisle ‘21. I am a key member of our golf team, and I participate in the Stock Market Club, Badminton Club and Vestry. I love the friendships I have made at VES with older and younger students and how those connections will continue long after our time at VES.
Rachel Xu ’22 | Beijing, China
I play on the volleyball team and sing in our Vocal Ensemble and am a founding member of our Photography Club. This year, I live on McCormick Dorm—our freshmen girls dorm—where I serve as a Counselor. One of my favorite things about VES is the smoothie bar in our dining hall. My go-to is mixed berries with spinach and banana!
Jana Yan ’23 | Qingdao, China
At VES, I live on Perkins Dorm where I also serve as a Junior Resident Assistant. I stay very busy as an RA, as well as a member of the Green Team, Photography Club, Yearbook staff, and Global Ambassadors. I also play tennis and enjoy our weekend trips to Starbucks. I love all the dogs our faculty have on campus, especially Wren Nealis!
Piercen Young ’22 | Lynchburg, VA
I am full-time boarding student, even though my family lives in Lynchburg. This year, I live and serve as a Counselor on Ainslie Dorm—our freshmen boys dorm. While basketball is my primary sport, I also like to play baseball in the spring. I love the environment at VES sporting events, especially the student section at basketball games. They really hype us up! In addition to athletics, I am a member of the Glee Club and the Stock Market Club.
Gabriella Yu ’23 | Beijing, China
I enjoy participating in a lot of after-school activities including Vocal Ensemble, Photography Club, Filmmaking, Yearbook, Chess Club and Badminton Club, and I live on campus on Perkins Dorm. . I love our community and all the friends I’ve made here at VES!
Fisher Zhang ’23 | Suzhou, China
This year, I live on Ainslie Dorm, where I also serve as a Junior Resident Assistant. I am a member of the cross country and basketball teams, and I love to play the piano. You will find me around campus taking photos at every major event and fun activities on the weekends, helping as an assistant to the Marketing & Communications team. What I love most about VES is that we are a small, close-knit community.
