Computer and telephone guidelines Computer guidelines | Telephone guidelines ![]() Each enrolled student at VES has his or her own Internet connection in their dorm room, a private email account, and personal folders on a server to store school work. Students are not required to bring personal computers to VES; however, it is strongly recommended. There are several areas on campus with computers available for student use as well as campus-wide wireless access. Regular access to a computer is a necessity for all VES students. Hardware requirements:
Software requirements Your computer must have an English operating system installed: Windows or Macintosh. Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Business are the preferred operating systems for use with the VES network. For support reasons, VES does not allow computers with any operating system language other than English. Each student may only have one (1) computer at VES at any time. The school-owned software is licensed for one computer per student. VES supplied software Part of the VES Technology Fee pays to have Microsoft Office and Symantec Enterprise Edition Antivirus installed on your child's computer for the duration of their time at VES. Upon leaving the school, Microsoft and Symantec require you to uninstall these two programs. Your email address All email addresses at VES are in the following format: firstinitiallastname@ves.org. If you use a nickname, the address will most likely be the first initial of your nickname. We create new email accounts after the Technology Orientation Seminar, where we receive your signed copy of the Acceptable Use Policy (PDF: 33K). Computing policies To gain rights to the VES network, each user must read, sign, and return the Acceptable Use Policy (PDF: 33K). Once processed, a unique user name and password are assigned to each student. Email and Internet access is available to all users. In addition, software applications, printers, scanners, digital cameras, digital video cameras, and other hardware devices are available for student use. VES maintains the right to monitor all folders and files on the server, including private folders. Privacy is not guaranteed. Electronic files and email messages that contain inappropriate material are subject to administrative review and action. Access times Computer network connections are turned on at 7:00 a.m. and go off at lights out. They remain on during study hall for schoolwork, research, and email. Telephone guidelines | Computer guidelines ![]() Using the telephone network Each dorm room has one telephone number and two private voice mailboxes. It is the responsibility of parents and students to provide a telephone. How telephone numbers are assigned Phone numbers are assigned by dormitory and room number. You will receive an information folder at the Technology Orientation Seminar that contains your dormitory name, room number, and telephone number. When you may receive calls Telephones are able to receive calls between 7:00 a.m. and lights out. Students are not able to receive calls during study hall, which runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., or after lights out. Voicemail messages may be left at any time, even when the phones are not available for incoming calls. Making a long-distance call Long-distance calls may be made with a pre-paid phone card, calling card, or through an 800 number. Pre-paid phone cards may be purchased in the VES bookstore and charged to your bookstore account. Voicemail Each student has his or her own voice mailbox. When someone calls a dorm room and voicemail answers, a greeting will instruct the caller to select which person he or she wishes to leave a message for. Students record their own personal greetings and create private pass codes for their voicemail boxes.
