2013 VES Alumni Golf Invitational

Having become a rite of spring for a cadre of loyal Bishops, The Pine Crest Inn in the Village of Pinehurst, NC once again played host to the Alumni Golf Invitational on July 19-21, 2013. This time-honored event, where friendships formed years ago are rekindled, and conversations pick up again as if it were only yesterday was terrific to witness - even better to experience.
The event started for some with a practice round on Thursday, played at the #5 course of the famed Pinehurst Resort, courtesy of Michael Edwards ’83. With preparations already underway for next year’s Men’s and Women’s US Open Championships, a sense of excitement and anticipation was evident all around the complex. Early arrivals enjoyed refreshments and conversation that evening on the front porch of the Inn, a wonderful dinner, and the advantage of a relaxed pace on Friday morning to meet tee times for the first official round of the event.
This Tournament has evolved over the years into a two-day, multi-level competition with Friday awards for Low Gross (The Lady Astor Cup) and Low Net (soon to be named for Lee Herbert ’74). The Class Cup is awarded to the best overall score from individual classes or class groups, with flight winners also recognized.
Saturday is now played as a captain’s choice format, where teams vie for the Chairman’s Trophy (In honor of founder Charlie Burton ’67 ) and bragging rights for the coming year. Mid-South hosted Friday’s play and Southern Pines Country Club, a player favorite, was the site of the hotly contested battle on Saturday.

Congratulations to the winners are certainly in order, as well as a sincere thanks to each player and attendee for making this event so special. The atmosphere of Pinehurst, combined with the camaraderie of old friends, reinforces a sense of loyalty and appreciation for not only one another, but for the institution that created that bond in the first place.
A special thanks is also in order for Jim Dudley ’76, Bill Lanford ’75, and Ian Sauer ’75 for their contributions to the festivities. Jim once again provided a delicious sampling of wines for both evenings, Bill graciously enhanced the prize offering with a new carry bag and balls for Saturday’s play, and Ian assumed the role of staff photographer for the event. Greatly appreciated and very helpful all!
Already on the calendar for July 18-19, 2014. We encourage those who have not yet experienced this event to consider joining the fun. I think it fair to consider the Invitational a “bucket list” item for alums – both young and old alike!
