Welcome from the Headmaster Welcome to the Virginia Episcopal School web site where we welcome your acquaintance with our VES Family and our academic community. Whether you are new to the school or whether you are an alumnus checking our calendar of events or getting in touch with a former teacher, my wife, Lynn, and I hope you will choose to visit campus soon. This is an exciting time to connect with VES. In the year 2016, we will celebrate our 100th birthday as a school community and planning is underway for a grand celebration. We have begun our preparations early to ensure that every member of our VES Family, from current students and parents to our most senior alumnus, has the chance to be involved in our journey. In the years between now and then, we will emulate the school's founding father who, from 1906 to 1916, dedicated his very best thoughts and untiring energy to building VES. Robert Carter Jett's influence is still very much alive in our culture and aspirations. We are the happy beneficiaries of his century old vision to draw out that which is noblest and finest in each person. As the school's tenth Headmaster, it is my pleasure to work alongside a talented and dedicated faculty and to interact both formally and informally with nearly a decade of terrific VES students. Our graduates' accomplishments at the next level, indeed, in life, are compelling evidence of the school's enduring value. My colleagues and I share a strong affection for our students and for VES; this is a special place to live and to learn. I hope you like what you see during your virtual tour of VES on this web site and that you will make plans to visit The Old 160 for a firsthand look. About the Hadleys Phil and Lynn Hadley came to VES during the summer of 1998. Dr. Hadley is the school's tenth Headmaster. Prior to moving to Lynchburg, the Hadleys lived in San Antonio, Texas, where Dr. Hadley was Headmaster of Saint Mary's Hall. He also served in various administrative positions at The Bishop's School in La Jolla, California, The Brookstone School in Columbus, Georgia, and St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. Dr. Hadley earned a B.S. degree in mathematics and an M.A. in Spanish literature from Ohio University, and a Ph.D. in Latin American history from the University of Texas. He is a member of the VES History Department and teaches elective courses in Latin American history, pre-Colombian civilizations, and an oral history class about VES. Mrs. Hadley is currently the Director of Activities at VES and serves on one of the duty teams as well. Also a graduate of the University of Texas with a B.S. in English, she taught English and history at St. Stephen's in Austin TX. and in schools in Columbus, GA and San Diego, CA. In San Antonio, Mrs. Hadley served as chair of the English department at Incarnate Word High School. Dr. and Mrs. Hadley have two grown children, a son and a daughter, who both live in Texas. The Hadleys live on campus in Jett House with their two cats. |
